Private Yoga

In yoga, practice does not make a person perfect, practice makes one a practitioner.

Yoga was originally passed down from teacher to disciple in a one-on-one setting. In keeping with that tradition, I offer lessons privately in New York City and online.

I aim to individualize my teaching to the person in front of me and offer what he or she needs. Ultimately my role as a teacher is to challenge my students, help them learn, uncover their weaknesses, overcome obstacles, keep them safe, and connect more deeply to themselves.  My approach is clear, precise, non-dogmatic, motivating, nurturing and fun.

As the relationship between myself and my students grow, trust builds which allows the ancient tradition of yoga to reveal itself through the magic of parampara, an unbroken chain of transmission passed from teacher to student.

Practice becomes firmly established when it has been conducted with sincerity and respect without interruption over a long period of time.

YOGA SUTRAS OF PATANJALI ~1.14

Is Private Yoga for me?

  • You will learn the foundations of the practice at a pace that matches your skill level. Safety, proper form, and use of breath are the utmost priority so that you can build confidence as a practitioner. The private yoga format allows space for questions throughout the lesson, encouraging interactive dialogue between teacher and student.

  • Group classes can be overwhelming without a grasp of the basics. It is common to loose confidence when practicing in front of other people. Rest assured, during a private lesson I am watching closely but without judgement.

  • Conforming to a group class schedule may be impossible for you.  I provide the convenience of coming to your home or office at a time that works for you.

  • Private instruction allows you to benefit from yoga while keeping yourself safe in the recovery process. You can learn how to avoid actions that may impede healing, modify the postures, and use props to support the body.

  • The private structure is designed specifically for you. I offer a tailored practice to restore balance to body, mind, and emotions.

  • I am invested in your growth and journey as a student of yoga. I keep you accountable to your practice in an effort to carry you forward.

  • Like any endeavor the refinements to a yoga practice are endless.  A private lesson will allow time to dissect and workshop a specific posture that is a challenge such as a handstand or backbend.

How We Work Together

  • I see students in their homes and offices in NYC.

I work with students online anywhere in the world over Zoom.

I come to you at a time that fits into your schedule.

Lessons are either 60 or 90 minutes in length held at a standing time each week.

Lessons are available Monday through Friday.

  • Private Yoga lessons are tailored to your needs and may incorporate the following methodologies

Ashtanga, Iyengar, Yin, Restorative, Chair Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Pranayama and interdisciplinary methods such as Bartenieff Fundamentals, strength training, and mayofascial release.

Ultimately my role as a teacher is to challenge my students, help them learn, uncover their weaknesses, overcome obstacles, keep them safe, and connect more deeply to themselves.

What My Community Says

  • I have enjoyed tremendously the past three and a half years with Carly. She was so great in person and pivoted so well to online sessions when Covid shut down the city. She has been such a great instructor bridging together my friend’s novice yoga practice with mine, which is more advanced, and has done it harmoniously, making things both easy to follow while also challenging. She is skillful and generous and can offer tremendous benefits to any level of ability or experience.

  • Carly and I have now been working together for about ten years and the impact on mind and body has been a revelation. Carly is a wonderful caring person and a joy to be with. Her thoughtfully designed sessions leave me relaxed and restored, but also very proud of what she has helped me to achieve. Now in my 80s, I am quite strong still, but also more limber and flexible than I have ever been before. Yoga is wonderful, but practicing with Carly is exceptional. I am forever grateful.

  • Although walking into my first private yoga session was a terrifying experience, my fear disappeared instantly when I met Carly. She is the kind of teacher you dream about—kind, funny, insightful and nurturing. While she has a deep knowledge of and love for yoga, she is also humble and gentle in her approach. Her unique way of knowing just how much to challenge and just how much to support has helped me grow. Because of her ability as a teacher, I have developed strength and flexibility in my body that I had thought was gone for good.

  • To me, Carly's quality as a teacher does not just rest in her amazing ability to do and teach asana, and to adjust her students to reach physical limits beyond expectation, but it is to teach her students to go beyond the poses and expectations and to help them embrace where they are in their practice and by doing this, where they are in their life. With Carly’s passion for yoga and compassion for her students, she was able to teach me a valuable lesson, that yoga can truly heal me and that it goes beyond any physical practice.

  • Carly is an expert on the human body.  She has designed a yoga practice for me personally that involves stretch, strength, and, most importantly, balance. She knows when to push me and also when to modify poses for my body's needs. She a delight to have in my home and loves my dog too!
